The Dart
Elevated high above the Mangawhai coast in New Zealand, this holiday house by Studio John Irving Architects is shaped like a dart, coming to an elegantly attenuated point that creates a strong, sculptural form in the landscape.
Elevated high above the Mangawhai coast in New Zealand, this holiday house by Studio John Irving Architects is shaped like a dart, coming to an elegantly attenuated point that creates a strong, sculptural form in the landscape.
Hugging the contours of the hill’s ridge, The Dart has retracting sliding doors to either side of the building to open a breezeway, breaking up its form and creating incredible views over the ocean and hills. The boundaries between inside and the expansive outdoor deck are further blurred by the architect’s use of the same timber battens on the interior and exterior. The central area, designed as a social space, contains the kitchen and an open living area which creates flow between the two wings and embraces the surrounding scenery of the remarkable Breamtail region.

In the kitchen, the integration of the Fisher & Paykel French door refrigerator-freezer and CoolDrawer™ refrigerator play a key role in maintaining the consistent internal and external timber theme. On the other hand, the contemporary gas range cooker breaks up the timber scheme - making it a contrasting piece which beautifully catches the eye amongst the incredible detail and perfection of the central living area.
Raw materials like concrete, steel and wood are refined and precisely machined to eliminate gaps and give a seamless effect. The timber battens on the cabinetry are meticulously lined up so that wood grain flows consistently. Additionally, the island extends to the floor, making it appear part of the overall form of the house. Dark elements provide a further opportunity to break up the material scheme in a highly considered kitchen.
The combination of the integrated French door refrigerator and the Integrated CoolDrawer™ provides versatile refrigeration opportunities without altering the architect’s desired material pallet. The CoolDrawer™ has a Variable Temperature Zone which allows five different food modes from freezer to wine, making a useful appliance for regular entertainers and socialisers.
