COOGEE APARTMENT

In Sydney's Coogee Beach, Hayden Bagnall's modestly sized apartment kitchen balances the designer's love of art with the capacity to entertain guests.
While the galley kitchen has a modest footprint, it faces the sun, and the apartment is additionally bathed in natural light from three sides, creating a luminous setting. Hayden distilled the values he and his partner hold dear, mixing eclectic modernism with a laid–back warmth and a highly efficient use of space.

The couple's love of entertaining was a key factor determining the layout. Rather than create divisions between different areas, Hayden designed them to flow into one another, using appliances to create functional zones. For example, a small library space next to a west–facing window near the kitchen entrance has a seamlessly integrated CoolDrawer™ for easy access to drinks. The home's main food care solution, an Integrated French Door Refrigerator Freezer, is "the perfect fit", says the designer. "The ability to open two separate, smaller doors, as opposed to one oversized door proved ideal for this space." And the three-burner cooktop "works perfectly in a narrow kitchen with limited bench space."
Smart spatial planning and Hayden's in–depth knowledge of the Fisher & Paykel range aided his pursuit of a functional, fluid and minimal kitchen. His intent was to create a seamless shadow line in the cabinetry, running the length of the kitchen. The option to integrate Fisher & Paykel's appliances within the cabinetry allowed this intention to be realised, and it brings order and ease to the space.
