Karekare Weekender

Folded between the dense native forest of the Waitakere Ranges, and the moody black-sand coastline, the Karekare beach house, designed by Stevens Lawson Architects, is hidden in the steep, bush-clad hills and gives a sense of near-isolation.

The Tree Canopy

Like most sophisticated designs, Architectural studio Steven Lawson proposed an efficient and deceptively simple plan. The house is composed of two stacked blocks. The smaller block at ground level contains the entrance and an open-plan space, while the larger block upstairs has the bathrooms, bedrooms and, off the master bedroom, a private deck, all at the height of the tree canopy.

Seamless Integration

The kitchen is approached as a workshop, a humble and functional space where the scale of each feature is just enough to fill a need, and nothing more. The idea of appliances as pieces of furniture was explored and three freestanding timber cabinets were created. These cabinets are positioned along the back wall and seamlessly hold the integrated fridge, dishwasher and oven. The centre of the kitchen holds an island, also freestanding, containing the sink with its perfectly minimal brass mixer tap, under-counter storage, and a double gas burner set into its glossy surface.

Minimal Footprint

The importance of leaving a minimal footprint has been implemented into every decision, resulting in a design of fantastic precision. The kitchen has been sized with an ‘enough is enough’ approach where the appliances need to be versatile and provide multiple cooking, washing and refrigeration options, whilst still minimising the house’s ecological output.

Respect for the Planet

Respect for the planet is entrenched into Fisher and Paykel’s values and design pillars. Appliances are designed to reduce energy and water use, without compromising performance, with the belief that many small innovations pay big dividends over time. Suitable for the Karekare beach house, the Integrated French Door Refrigerator Freezer adapts to daily use by cooling and defrosting only when needed, providing greater energy efficiency without compromising on food care.
